The dry season is here in Northern Michigan, & that means it’s time to stock up on my favorite homemade hand lotion! Winters are long & cold here – it’s been in the single digits all week! – so we go through a lot of it. A few years ago my skin started reacting to several of the lotions & cosmetics I was using, so I wanted to find a hand lotion I could make myself to try to eliminate the chemicals found in most store bought lotions.
So I had a few rules I wanted to follow:
- It needed to be easy. I didn’t want to follow a lot of steps trying to make homemade lotion. It had to be quick & easy!
- Simple ingredients. I wanted to use as few ingredients as possible – and I wanted those ingredients to be easy to find! There’s no time to go on a wild goose chase looking for a dozen hard-to-find ingredients for 1 recipe.
So here it is – in my opinion!- the perfect homemade hand lotion recipe! I’ve been making it for over 4 years, & even my husband prefers it over store bought brands. It’s easy to make & only uses 5 ingredients. You also have the option of adding any other essential oil to your lotion to make a personalized scent, & if you want, you can add a preservative to your homemade lotion to increase its shelf life up to several months. Even if you decide to add these things, the list of ingredients is really straightforward & simple.
Easy Homemade Lavender Lotion (although you can really scent it however you want!)
Start by gathering your supplies. You will need:
1/8 cup olive oil
1/8 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup emulsifying wax
1 1/4 cup water
Optional- your choice of essential oils to scent your lotion (15-25 drops)
Optional- 1/4 tsp Potassium Sorbate preservative to extend the lotion’s shelf life
Note: Any combination of oil will work for this recipe, as long as you use a total of 1/4 cup oil – olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil, etc. My favorite combination during the winter is a 50/50 mix of olive oil & coconut oil, & during the summer I typically just use olive oil.
Note: It’s important to make sure that you are working with clean equipment when you make your lotion to help extend its shelf life. Without adding a preservative, your lotion will stay fresh for up to 3 weeks. Store any extra in the refrigerator for an extended shelf life, especially during warmer summer months.
Homemade Lavender Hand Lotion Recipe:
-Combine olive oil, coconut oil & emulsifying wax in microwave safe dish
-Heat in the microwave for about 1 minute, or until all the emulsifying wax is melted
-Add essential oils to oil/wax mixture. For a more mild scent, add 15-20 drops. For a stronger scent, add 25+ drops
-Heat 1 1/4 cup water in the microwave for 1 minute 5 seconds
-Add 1/4 tsp preservative to heated water & stir to dissolve
-Combine oil/wax mixture with water & watch your lotion turn a milky white
-Leave to set & stir occasionally
Note: I have found that the temperatures of the wax/oil mixture & water alters the consistency of the lotion & how long it takes for it to set. If the temperatures aren’t quite hot enough it will take a little longer to set & will be more thin in consistency.
Once it is finished, make sure to store your new homemade hand lotion in a clean, dry container to extend its shelf life. If you’re going to store it in a jar, be sure to scoop the lotion out with clean hands, or store in a pump or squeeze bottle to avoid contaminating it.
Have fun with scent combinations for your homemade lotion! Here are some of my favorites:
-15 drops of lavender & 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
-10 drops peppermint & 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
-15 drops frankincense essential oil- (use as face lotion for amazing benefits & healthy skin!)
-8 drops frankincense, 8 drops lavender & 8 drops tangerine
What scent of homemade hand lotion will you try first?
